BISHOPS URGED TO MOTIVATE CHURCH COMMUNICATION APOSTOLATE

An appeal has been made to the Bishops of the Catholic Church in Nigeria to make the communication apostolate of the Church in the country more vibrant and proactive with adequate funding, provision of modern-day communication equipment and continuous formation of Catholic communicators, particularly those working for the Church in Nigeria.

The call was contained in the resolutions adopted by participants at the 7th Northern Regional Congress of Catholic Media Practitioners of Nigeria (CAMP), held recently at the Our Lady of Fatima Cathedral Church, Kano, Kano state. The document was signed by Very Rev. Fr. Augustine Nnadi, the diocesan director of communication and Mr. Patrick Osu, Northern Region Coordinator of the association.

Other resolutions adopted by the participants included: a call on members of the association to sensitize Catholic faithful on the need for them to take advantage of the social media and networking to reach out with the Good News of Christ;  develop a crisis reporting template to assist members avoid exaggeration of issues/conflict in the society;  establish institutions for training and retraining of members to keep them abreast of the modern day information  technology methods and equipment and facilitate the integration of secular news into print information organs of the Church to enhance readership and help Catholic faithful to be properly informed generally about the country.

The participants while calling on the government to be more proactive in addressing the religious and the socio-economic challenges facing the country with a view of ensuring justice and equity in the society, advocated a synergy between the Justice Development and Peace commission (JDPC) in all the dioceses in the country to facilitate the involvement of the Church in the democratic development of the country.

They reiterated their commitment to the promotion of the communication apostolate of the Church using all available means of information technology at their disposal and called on Catholic communicators throughout the country to remain steadfast in their faith and persevere in the face of persecution; for the common good of the Nigerian nation.
