MOSLEMS URGED TO PRAY AND COLLABORATE IN PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

Muslims throughout the world have been called upon to use this year’s Ramadan season to pray and collaborate with Christians and other Religious groups to protect the environment, which the Holy Father Pope Francis described as the common home of all humanity.
The call was made by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (PCIB), in its 2017 Ramadan Fasting message to Muslims throughout the world, released recently at the Vatican city. The theme of the message is: Christians and Muslims: Caring for Our common Home, Dear Muslim Brothers and Sisters. The statement was signed by by Jean-Louis Cardinal Tauran and Bishop Miguel Angel Ayuso Gixot M.C.C.I.; President and Secretary of the Council respectively.
Premising the message on the Encyclical of the Holy Father – Laudato Si; the Council note among other things that: “there are, for example, certain philosophical, religious and cultural perspectives that present obstacles which threaten humanity’s relationship with nature. To take up this challenge involves all of us, regardless of whether or not we profess a religious belief.”
Outlining the activities of the Council aimed at promoting dialogue, cordial relationship, harmony and love between the faithful of the two religions, the Council further stated: “The experience of both our religious communities affirms the value of this Message for promoting cordial relations between Christian and Muslim neighbours and friends, by offering insights on current and pressing issues.”

The statement further noted that “As believers, our relationship with God should be increasingly shown in the way we relate to the world around us. Our vocation to be guardians of God’s handiwork is not optional, nor it is tangential to our religious commitment as Christians and Muslims: it is an essential part of it.”

The council concluded by praying that “the religious insights and blessings that flow from fasting, prayer and good works sustain you, with God’s help, on the path of peace and goodness, to care for all the members of the human family and for the whole of creation”.
