The Federal Government has been challenged to improve on the implementation of international human rights laws, which Nigeria is a signatory to. The call was made by Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) Director of Department of Church and Society, Rev Fr. Uchechukwu Obodoechina, in an opening speech he delivered at the opening ceremony of the Strategy Workshop on Human Rights Promotion-Part 2, organized by Misereor Dialogue and Partnership Service (DPS), held recently, at the CSN Resource Centre, Durumi, Abuja. Fr Obodoechina, who doubles as the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, CARITAS Nigeria, also urged participants at the workshop to look into the reality of the prevailing human rights context in Nigeria and contrive better approaches that are consistent with the new norm for effective human rights service delivery in the country. He stressed that it is his hope that Nigeria will truly be a nation where peace and justice reign. The cleric noted that Nigeria has been signatory to sets of international laws, covenants and treaties that border on respect of persons and people socially, economically, culturally and politically. He declared: “Although these rights and freedoms implied could be deprived in certain instances, however, the dimension of their administration and management by the government, and compliance by the people, especially in recent times and events, call for concern, for which the human rights community is challenged to prove more relevant in modulating the precarious trend and magnitude”. Earlier in his remark, the DPS Manager, Mr. Cosmas Olaniyan noted that the workshop was aimed at seeking how to bring participants to a better understanding of the new realities and to seek better ways of navigating through the storm, human rights’ environment decently and effectively in the discharge of their services to humanity. The theme of the workshop was: ‘Better Ways for Human Rights Promotion in the New Normal’.
